BEST OF OFFICIALS #1 - THE CHARRAIX DOWNHILL
Hotspots, grueling sections, or scenic views: we’re kicking off the description of the main challenges awaiting you on your routes between Saugues and Le Puy-en-Velay. Hold on tight!
📍 Ultra du Saint-Jacques - KM 9 The Charraix Descent
After the start in Saugues, this is the first long, fully downhill, and occasionally technical section of the race, winding along the Darne stream from Charraix to Légal. The route alternates between woodland single tracks and more demanding paths, where roots and uneven terrain require extra vigilance. For those further back in the pack, night will begin to fall, and these sections must be tackled with headlamps on.
Beware of the "downhill euphoria": going too fast here could prove costly for the rest of the race.
After eight kilometers of descending, the trail reaches the banks of the Allier river and the first water point at Saint-Julien-des-Chazes. Note: this is an isolated spot with no access for companions/supporters as the roads are closed to traffic!
This aid station is hosted by La Guinguettina, an iconic riverside cabin on the Allier, famous for its lively summers filled with drinks, great food, and festive evenings.
